Thin-bodied porcelain is a renowned traditional craft product from Jingdezhen, also known as "Buotai Porcelain" or "Eggshell Porcelain". The walls of this porcelain are only 0.5 millimeters thick. It is said to be "as thin as a cicada's wing, as bright as glass, and as light as a floating cloud."
Jingdezhen has a long history of producing thin-bodied porcelain. As early as the 10th century, Yingqing porcelain fired in Jingdezhen had already achieved the level of being thin and lightweight.
The manufacturing process of thin-bodied porcelain involves more than 40 steps, from ingredient preparation, throwing, trimming, glazing, painting, to firing, all done by hand and fired three times. The trimming and artistic processing are particularly delicate. Trimming requires coarse trimming, fine trimming, and precise trimming, repeated hundreds of times to reduce the thickness of the rough body from 2-3 millimeters to about 0.5 millimeters. The varieties include bowls, cups, plates, saucers, wine cups, lamps, vases, stationery, and wine sets.
Jingdezhen thin-bodied porcelain developed from the Northern Song Dynasty's Yingqing porcelain. It began during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, achieved significant success during the Chenghua period, and produced famous products like the "Eggshell Cup" and "Flowing Haze Cup" during the Wanli period. During the Longqing and Wanli years (1567-1620) of the Ming Dynasty, a famous porcelain craftsman from Jingdezhen named Hao Shijiu, who called himself "Old Man Hu Yin," made an "Eggshell Cup" that was "as thin as a cicada's wing."
In addition to Jingdezhen, places like Liling in Hunan, Fengxi in Guangdong, Tangshan in Hebei, and Jiangyin in Jiangsu also produce thin-bodied porcelain. Chinese thin-bodied porcelain is renowned worldwide, especially the thin-bodied porcelain produced in Jingdezhen, which is famous and exported to more than 60 countries and regions.
